Top 5 items for the traveling Bergamasco

We love to travel with our dogs. We take them with us on vacation when we travel and we also travel to shows. Show travel usually consists of staying for a few days at a hotel or Airbnb. When we vacation, we take them with us for upwards of a week or more. Some Bergamascos handle travel really well and some go off their food. Some get upset stomachs and some will be excited to explore and leave you with 300 burrs in their coats after a romp in a field. We don’t always need to use these items but I feel better knowing I have them. Here are my top 5 Bergamasco travel items! The images will link to the item. I don’t endorse any one place to purchase them so I encourage you to shop around for the best prices.

  1. Slicker brush

A slicker brush is a must have because you never know what your dog is going to get into. Burdock, leaves, grass clippings, mud etc. this has you covered. I like the ones with harder bristles.

2. Pumpkin flakes

These are much easier to pack than canned pumpkin. You can buy a bag of Firm It Up and mix it with their food or wet it slightly and make little meatballs out of it. If your dog sometimes gets soft stool when traveling it can be due to stress or change in diet. Sometimes they are fed stuff they are not used to in an attempt to make them eat or they get into something in a new place. Either way, this stuff works wonders. I always bring it just in case. The pumpkin flakes act like a pectin and binds them up. Most dogs seem to like it.

3. Travel water bowl

But not just any travel bowl, one that keeps their faces mostly dry and doesn’t get water all over the floors in your rental. This bowl by Els Pet is awesome. It has a floating plate that doesn’t allow them to dunk their muzzles. I can even keep it full in the car while we are moving and it doesn’t spill. It is small and lightweight and perfect for a trip.

4. Waterproof pad

We double these as whelping pads but they are great for throwing on a white duvet too! Our Bergamascos get dirty on a rainy day or when at the beach. We don’t want them to leave evidence at rentals on their couches or beds. These are waterproof and will also protect your car. They come in all different sizes and are great quality. We use them at home too.

5. A rechargeable battery fan

We recently came back from a cabin in Maine and I was so happy we had our fans with us. Sometimes you don’t expect it to be as hot and humid as it can be and with these you will be ready. Bergamascos hate humidity, don’t we all? I use these in the car when I run an errand, in front of their crates at a show and as a full room fan in a hotel or rental. The smaller ones are great if you have limited space. The larger Air Cannon will double as a full room or van fan and also drown out all other noises. Your dogs will be cool and comfortable no matter the weather.
